Program Outline
Stanton has the intensive English as a Second Language program in 5 locations in Southern California. Stanton students learn English and study skills and acquire abilities to be successful in the United States. The ESL curriculum focuses on English language abilities along with the academic preparation needed to study at universities in the United States.
ESL Instructors
ESL faculty members are dedicated professionals in the field of language learning who take a personal interest in their students' progress and hold university degrees in Linguistics, and other related fields. They are experienced in teaching English as a Second Language.
Class Descriptions:
Each class meets 16 hours per week for 12 weeks in one quater.
Level 1-3: Beginning Proficiency
- Level 1
Students in these levels receive basic instruction in written and spoken English. This course caters to the Beginner level student and it primarily focuses on grammar acquisition, vocabulary building, Pronunciation and listening comprehension. Introductory level conversations comprise the bulk of this class' discussions.
- Level 2
Practice in spontaneous conversation, small group discussion, and introduction to English grammar.
- Level 3
Continuation of intensive conversation, grammar, and reading skills. Student should possess basic skills in conversation and grammar and be able to read simple articles by course completion.
- Level 4
Intermediate Conversation, Reading, and Writing.
This course develops the student's increasing mastery of English communication skills by emphasizing common grammatical structure, vocabulary, conversation, and reading comprehension. Special emphasis is placed on higher-level discussions and appropriate use of language equivalent)
- Level 5
Advanced
Designed for advanced students who have mastered basic English. This course prepares the students for the challenge of advanced college-level reading, writing and conversation. However, not only do we improve our students' English level, but also their confidence in comprehension skills and more practice in speaking English. Controversial class discussions and comprehensive understanding of American slang and idioms. Also draws on newspapers, magazines, and audio and video tapes.
TOEFL Preparation
This course is designed to prepare students for the Internet Based TOEFL (iBT) examination. It covers Speaking (Independent and Integrated), Writing (Independent and Integrated), Listening and Reading, as well as English Structure. Class meets 4 hours per week, including three hours of simulated tests in the computer lab.
Courses Offered:
Pronunciation
This course teaches the principles and techniques of English pronunciation, including producing individual sounds and sequences of sounds, stress, rhythm, and intonation.
Grammar
This course teaches with practical contexts the patterns of English grammar and rules of use. Students learn how and when to use the grammar they are studying as well as the correct forms. The Grammar course is coordinated with the Writing course.
Writing
Students work through the writing process step by step, from formulating ideas through revision. They learn to organize ideas, to use correct form and pronunciation, to use coherent structure, and how to edit and revise. Students write approximately two assignments per week as well as do other exercises in correcting and revising their writing.
Listening & Conversation
Students learn how to understand spoken English by working with materials from a wide variety of contexts and practicing speaking in formal and informal situations. They learn how to express their ideas in organized, grammatically acceptable ways.
Reading and Vocabulary
This course teaches students a variety of types of reading and teaches the reading skills of skimming, scanning, guessing meaning from context, and interpreting an author's point of view. Vocabulary development teaches word building, use of the dictionary, and reading speed.
Survival Skills
(Beginners & Basic levels): Students learn information necessary to getting by in their daily lives. Topics include the learning about the university and its services, living in apartments, shopping, banking, getting around town, making phone calls, etc.
TOEFL
ELS has developed a 12-week comprehensive Prep Program for the TOEFL® iBT that gives you the best preparation possible and the confidence you need to succeed! The new Internet based TOEFL® iBT requires students to answer questions related to speaking, listening, reading and writing - and measures not just what you know, but how well you can express yourself and apply your knowledge. By taking the Prep Program, you will practice integrated reading and listening skills, improve writing and speaking, as well as learn test-taking strategies.
- The Complete Prep Program for TOEFL® iBT includes 1 lessons per week of classroom instruction and practice in all key language skills: speaking, listening, pronunciation, vocabulary, reading and writing.
- The program begins with the ETS TOEFL® Practice Online (TPO) diagnostic test, with instant scoring and feedback
- Students progress through three different modules, each of which includes sample testing to measure progress and build confidence to take the actual test.
- Individual competencies and objectives are addressed through technology-supported learning in our new Language Technology Centers.
- Instructors, that have been trained and certified by ETS, work with students to build specific test-taking skills and strategies using the best materials available.
- At the end of the course, a prepaid seat for the official TOEFL® iBT is included, at the ELS center, offering the additional benefit of taking the test in familiar surroundings.
- Academic advising is included in the program for students who are considering further study at an American university, through ELS' professional University Placement service.
- Additionally, the course includes the ETSsm Online Writing Evaluation Service, with instant scoring and feedback by ETS on writing samples.
- ELS recommends starting on the published start date for the Complete Prep Program for best possible learning experience.
- Students must have advanced language proficiency to enroll. ELS can determine your ability by testing when you arrive, or through its new Pre-Arrival Test
Program Calendar:
The Stanton ESL Program conducts three intensive sessions per year. Each session lasts sixteen weeks. Dates of the current program and application deadlines are listed below. Applications are due on dates specified, no exceptions.
